NALP reports mixed news on diversity at Law Firms

Minority numbers bounce back while female associates continue to drop

NALP – The Association for Legal Professional – issued its findings on law firm demographics for 2011 in the NALP Directory of Legal Employers published Thursday, November 3. Unlike 2010 when law firm diversity took a hit, the percentage of minority lawyers at Major U.S. increased slightly from 12.4 to 12.7 percent.

The news was not so good for women however, where although the amount of women working at law firms was up, the percentage working as associates dropped for the second year running from 32.7 to 32.6 percent. The figure in 2009 had been 33 percent. While the percentage drop is small, it does equate to approximately 123 female attorneys in the firms questioned and is only the second time that there has been a consecutive yearly drop since NALP began compiling this in formation in the 1990’s.
